Escrito por Mônica Peters.Mônica Peters: Você tem um fundo em música clássica, Jazz e tocou piano por 10 anos. Você sempre quis fazer um álbum de clássica ou de Jazz?
Mike Shinoda: Sim, eu queria fazer um de titulo “Minuet in the Key of Bananas.” Seria uma mistura de Jazz com clássica..
MP: Como é trabalhar com John Legend?
MS: Eu escrevo as partes e eu mesmo canto, só que eu não faço isso 100%. Eu quis alguém com uma voz que tivesse alma nela, e ele veio imediatamente na minha mente. Eu peguei ele assim que ele parou de tocar na cidade com a Alicia Keys, e nós fomos pra fora um segundo. Nós vibramos com isso. Ele é um cara muito bonito e muito engraçado. Nós gastamos um tempão brincando no backstage. De quaquer forma, ele ta no meio da turnê, então ele acabou tendo que fazer a gravação na estrada.
MP: É verdade que você é descendente do compositor de música clássica Tchaikovsky?
MS: Descendente de sangue não. Só através de um primo.
MP: Você sentiu que a criatividade do processo é fácil quando você está trabalhando nesse álbum solo?
MS: Sim e não – Você não tem resposta pra isso, pode lhe dar um certo grau de liberdade, mas ninguém consegue se manter no rumo, ninguém. Pode ser fácil, mas o fácil nem sempre é a chave pra uma boa gravação.
MP: Como você se sente sobre o estado do Hip Hop? Você sente que há um contrapeso entre o hip hop underground e o hip hop ‘bling bling’?
MS: As pessoas costumam se queixar do hip hop. É verdade, Hip Hop é consideravelmente homogeneizado. Muitas músicas são como um rasgo na ultima música. Essa é a parte que me irrita mais do que qualquer coisa: gente que dá um rasgo na coisa e já acha que é musica. Mas sobre o conteúdo das letras, eu tenho uma música no The Rising Tied, chamada Cigarettes, que é o que eu sinto sobre o estado das coisas. Deixei-me dizer isso, quando eu vou para os filmes, as vezes eu gosto de ver o silêncio, muitos filmes violentos só deixam meu cérebro desligado por 90 minutos
MP: Você quer continuar com o solo permanentemente?
MS: É muito trabalho!! (hahaha) Nós estamos atualmente escrevendo as músicas no LP. Esse Projeto, Fort Minor, foi um ótimo detour.. mas eu planejo pensar bem, depois que lançarmos o próximo álbum do LP.
MP: É muito dificil estar casado e tentando manter a carreira musical?
MS: Yeah. Eu escrevi uma música, chamada Where’d you go pra mostrar pra minha mulher que eu sei como é quando eu saio. Primeiro ela iniciou disso, depois a história passou pra outras direções. Eu tenho outras pessoas que contaram suas histórias, de como é quando seus pais vão embora, também. Bem, a parte mais difícil de fazer isso é quanto tempo temos pra fazer.
MP: Eu sei que o gol de todo artista é que todos comprem o seu álbum. Você queria dizer que isso é importante pra você especialmente por ter apoio da comunidade Africana e Americana no seu álbum solo?
MS: Eu acho que eu posso dizer isso, o Hip Hop começou na comunidade negra – esse fato tem que ser respeitado por pessoas na minha situação. Outra coisa, no geral e nessa gravação, eu tentei ser eu mesmo, melhor do que tentar se encaixar dentro dos padrões dele e ganhar aceitação desse jeito. Então o que ta aí é o real conhecer o real – Só estou dizendo o que eu sei sobre esse álbum, e eu espero que todos, não importando a raça, possa respeitar a autenticidade disso, e como isso é único na minha história
MP: Parece que você dá muito valor à educação, e tem formação em Ilustração/Design gráfico. Se você tivesse idéia de que teria esse sucesso como artista, você pularia pra faculdade?
MS: Eu tenho formação em ilustração com ênfase em gráficos. Eu atualmente fiz uma série de pinturas pro artwork do The Rising Tied. Eu não teria pulado pra faculdade por nada, na verdade quando nós começamos à ingressar com a banda eu estava terminando a escola, continuei e passei. Eu tive um fim de semana que tinha dois finais pra fazer, mais um showcase de industria, com 5 representantes de gravadora vindo.. Foi o fim de semana mais estressante da minha vida.
MP: Você gosta de poesias, ou escreve poesias?
MS: Algo como minhas músicas? Não realmente. Eu os vejo como duas coisas diferentes, não quero insultar qualquer poeta dizendo que o que faço é poesia! Eu sei que tem paralelos, mas são diferentes também.
MP: Mike, por favor, não ria dessa pergunta, mas eu preciso perguntar. Eu sei que você é Japonês e caucasiano. Você sente que Vanilla Ice faz difícil para rappers caucasianos a serem levados a sério? (OS: Eu amo Beastie Boys e 3rd Bass).
MS: Nós podemos olhar pra trás e rir agora. Eu quero dizer, quanta diferença há entre ele e os outros, será que não podem fazer tudo o que esses rappers estão fazendo, sobre o fato de que eles começaram numa formula mais baixa? Pessoalmente, eu lembro do período em que eu era criança até o ensino médio, em que eu odiava música comercial. Ele e Milli Vanilli eram as grandes vendas. E na verdade eles só estavam fingindo o que não eram.
MP: Você tem filhos? Quantos você gostaria de ter?
MS: Não tenho filhos. [claro. Com a vaca da Anna, n ia qrer ter mesmo haha]
MP: Escolha um: Ben and Jerry ou Hagen Daas?
MS: eu gosto muito de sorvete. Minha mulher me diz que sou um esnobe em sorvete. Eu queria sorvete de Mochi. Chá verde. [huaheiuaheiuaehiuae]
MP: Ultima pergunta, mas não menos importante – Como você está hoje? O que você faz hoje?
MS: Eu estou bem. Eu tenho duas conferencias em telefone por hora sobre meu grupo no Fort Minor, o álbum do LP, nossa gravadora, nossa companhia de marketing. Eu tenho alguns intervalos em e-mails. Eu vou só almoçar com minha esposa – uma pequena lancheria na esquina. Eu provavelmente vou trabalhar no Fort Minor o resto do dia.

MP: You have a background in classical music, jazz music, and played piano for 10 years. Would you ever like to put out a classical or jazz album?
MS: Yes, and it would be entitled “Minuet in the Key of Bananas.” It would be a Jazz / Classical mash-up album.
MP: What was it like working with John Legend?
MS: I had written that part and sang it myself, and it didn't feel 100% right. I realized that I wanted to hear a smoother, more soulful voice on it, and he came immediately to mind. I caught him before he played in town with Alicia Keys, and we hung out for a sec. We vibed out to it, and just sat and chopped it up for a sec. He’s a pretty funny guy—we spent a lot of time making fun of the “backstage” scene. Anyway, he was in the middle of a tour, so he ended up having to take the song on the road to record it.
MP: Is it true that you are a descendent of classical music composer Tchaikovsky?
MS: Not blood related-through a cousin.
MP: Did you feel the creative process was is easier when working on this solo album?
MS: Yes and no—you have no one to answer to, which can give you a certain degree of freedom, but then there’s no one else to keep you on track, either. It may be easier, but easy isn’t always the key to a good record.
MP: How do you feel about the state of hip hop? Do you now feel that there is a good balance between "underground" hip hop and "bling bling" hip hop?
MS: People like to complain about hip hop. It’s true, hip hop is pretty homogenized—a lot of stuff sounds like a rip off of the last song. That’s the part the annoys me more than anything: people blatantly ripping off someone else’s song. But as for the lyrical content, I have a song on “The Rising Tied” called “Cigarettes” that addresses how I feel about the state of things. Let’s just say that, when I go to the movies, sometimes I like to watch the dumbest, most violent movie just to turn my brain off for 90 minutes.
MP: Do you want to go solo permanently?
MS: It’s too much work! (hahaha) We’re actually writing Linkin Park songs right now. This Fort Minor project has been a really great detour, though, and I plan to see it through before the next LP album.
MP: Is it hard being married and trying to maintain a music career?
MS: Yeah. I actually wrote a song called “Where’d You Go” to show my wife that I know what it’s like when I’m gone. The song actually starts there, then the story trails off into other directions. I have had other people say it’s descriptive about their parent who was always gone, too. At any rate, the hardest part about doing what I do is how much time it can take up.
MP: I know that the goal of an any artist is to have all people buy their album. Would you say that is important to you to especially have the support of the African American community on your solo album?
MS: I guess I can say that, since hip hop started in the Black community—that fact must be respected by a person in my situation. On another note, in general and on this record, I try to be myself, rather than trying to fit in and gain acceptance that way. So what it comes down to is “real recognize real”—I’m just talking about what I know about on this record, and I hope that people, regardless of race, can respect the authenticity of that, and the uniqueness of my story.
MP: It seems like you value education very much and have a degree in Illustration/Graphic Design. If you had any idea that you were going to be successful as an artist, would you have skipped going to college?
MS: I do have a degree in illustration, with an emphasis on graphics . I actually did a series of paintings for the artwork of “The Rising Tied.” I wouldn’t have skipped college for anything, in fact we were in the process of getting signed as I was finishing school, and I still got to classes and passed. I had one weekend where I had two finals due, plus an industry showcase with five label representatives coming. It was the most stressful weekend of my life.
MP: Do you like poetry or write poetry?
MS: Other than my songs? Not really. I see the two as kind a different, and I wouldn’t want to insult any poets by saying that what I do is poetry! I know there are parallels, but there are some differences, too.
MP: Mike, please don't laugh at this question but I have to ask. I know that you are Japanese and Caucasian. Do you feel that Vanilla Ice made it harder for Caucasian rappers to be taken seriously? (Note: I love the Beastie Boys and 3rd Bass).
MS: We can look back at it and laugh now. I mean, how much different is what he did then from what some of these rappers are doing now, besides the fact that they’ve got the formula more down? Personally, I remember going through a long period in junior high through high school where he was the epitome of what I hated about commercial music. He and Milli Vanilli were the biggest sell outs ever. And by sell outs, what I really mean is that they pretended to be something they were not.
MP: Do you have any children? How many kids do you want to have?
MS: I don’t have kids.
MP: Choose one Ben and Jerry's or Hagen Daas?
MS: I like ice cream a lot—my wife calls me an ice-cream snob. I would go mochi ice cream. Green tea.
MP: Last question but not least-- How are you today? What did you do today?
MS: I’m fine. I had a two-hour conference call with my team about the Fort Minor record, Linkin Park stuff, our label, and our marketing company. I have some interviews set up via email. I just went to lunch with my wife-A small sandwich shop around the corner. I’ll probably be handling Fort Minor business for the rest of the day.
